Attorney Jacob Ahler
Jacob Ahler is a Partner Attorney at The Law Office of Riley and Ahler, P.C. Jacob primarily focuses his practice on Commercial Law, Estate Planning, Civil Litigation, and Criminal Defense. Jacob also serves as a public defender in Tippecanoe County Indiana.
Before practicing law as an Attorney, Jacob worked as a Certified Legal Intern for Michael Riley Esq and as an Associate Justice on the Staton Moot Court Board where he was appointed to the Order of the Barristers. Jacob received his J.D. at Indiana University and his A.B. from Wabash College. While at Wabash, Jacob was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Jacob is admitted to practice law in the State of Indiana, as well as the Northern Federal District in Indiana. Jacob is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association and the Jasper County Bar Association.
Prior to returning to Rensselaer, Jacob worked for the Office of the Indiana Attorney General where he investigated licensed professionals for misconduct. Jacob also worked as an assistant to U.S. Senator Richard Lugar in Washington D.C. and as a law clerk at the law firm of Spagnolo & Hoeksema LLC in Chicago, Illinois.
Jacob is a proud native of Rensselaer who decided to move back to his hometown and get involved in community improvement. Jacob is involved in the Knights of Columbus, Rensselaer Rotary Club, and volunteers his time with the Boy Scout Troop 152 where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Attorney Brooke Scheurich
Brooke Scheurich is an Associate Attorney at The Law Office of Riley and Ahler P.C. Brooke primarily focuses her practice on Criminal Defense and Family Law.
Brooke was born in Rensselaer, Indiana and has remained a life-long resident of Jasper County. Following graduation from Kankakee Valley High School, Brooke attended Purdue University in West Lafayette where she achieved a double major in Psychological Sciences and Law & Society. Brooke received her J.D. from Valparaiso University School of Law.
Before being admitted to practice law, Brooke served as a CASA advocate in Porter County providing representation in Court for children in need of services. She also worked as a Certified Legal Intern with the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office and served as a Teen Court Judge for troubled youth in Northwest Indiana. Brooke currently serves as the attorney for the Jasper County Animal Control Board.
Attorney Kristy Hoeksema
Kristy Hoeksema was first licensed to practice law in 1992 in Illinois after graduating from Valparaiso University School of Law, Magna Cum Laude. She is also a proud graduate of Valparaiso University where she received her Bachelor of Art in Political Science in 1989. It was at Valparaiso where she met her husband, Jeff, of thirty years. Now that their three children have grown, they have decided to return to Northwest Indiana.
Kristy’s practice, Spagnolo and Hoeksema, focuses on providing legal services to individuals, families and their businesses. She has had her own practice since 2002 where she has focused on Civil Litigation, Commercial Law, Wills, Trusts and Probate and business matters. She has successfully represented small businesses in multi-million dollar disputes against large companies like Prudential Insurance Company of America and Motorola.
Currently, Kristy is admitted to the Illinois Bar and the Federal District of Northern Illinois and has been since 1992. She has applied to the Indiana Bar of Law Examiners seeking to be granted an Indiana license based upon her years of practice in Illinois but at this time only has an Illinois license and is working on all legal matters in Indiana in conjunction with Jacob Ahler in an “Of-Counsel” capacity.

Avery received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University, where he majored in Financial Counseling and Planning. It was through his studies at Purdue where he realized a true appreciation for individuals who spend their entire lives working and saving their hard-earned dollar to build wealth. Avery decided to pursue a law degree so that he could not only help families accomplish their goals of building wealth and preserving their assets, but also ensure that these assets get transferred to their children and grandchildren in a manner that minimizes taxation and overall governmental interference. Avery will graduate this May, obtaining his juris doctor from the University of Toledo College of Law.
While in practice, Avery plans to primarily focus his practice on Estate Planning, Medicaid Qualification and Asset Preservation Planning, Tax Planning, IRS Defense, Bankruptcy, Farm and Business Succession Planning, and other financial and transactional matters.
Avery was born and raised in Rensselaer, Indiana, and is excited to return home to serve the community. Prior to accepting his position with The Law Office of Riley and Ahler, Avery has worked as a research clerk for BB&C Attorneys at Law in Lafayette, IN, and as a Certified Legal Intern with our firm. In addition, Avery has worked for the Toledo Tax Controversy Clinic during his final year of law school, where he represented financially burdened clients in IRS audits, appeals, and collections matters.
Attorney Michael Riley
Michael Riley was engaged in the practice of law for over fifty years. Mr. Riley opened his law office in Rensselaer in 1980 and provided expert legal advice to residents in Jasper and surrounding counties. Before practicing law in Rensselaer, Mr. Riley practiced law in Indianapolis, Indiana for fifteen years. While in Indianapolis, Mr. Riley tried numerous criminal cases, including multiple death penalty cases. He had been lead counsel in over two hundred jury trials, both criminally and civilly. Mr. Riley served as the Chief Public Defender in Jasper County Indiana.
Mr. Riley served on the Board of Directors for the Indiana Trial Lawyers and for eight years was Chairman of the Indiana Law-Pac. In 2002 he was honored by receiving the Consumer Advocate of the Year. Additionally, Mr. Riley received the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996, Indiana's highest award given to a citizen.
Over the course of his legal career, Mr. Riley represented thousands of clients to help bring each case to a swift and satisfactory resolution. Mr. Riley received his B.A. from Indiana State University and his J.D. from Indiana University.
Mr. Riley was admitted to practice in the State of Indiana and the Northern District of Indiana. Mr. Riley was a member of the Indiana State Bar Association and Indiana Trial Lawyers.
